the momentum and governor romney gained some momentum. do you think that paul ryan will be able to keep that momentum up? >> i absolutely do. he is great legislator. he has a vision for this country. people, when he was picked as a vice presidential candidate republicans rallied around him. he has been helpful in battleground states like wisconsin. the challenge is for the democrats, they keep saying -- oh, romney lied. guess what? they lost the last debate and they can't get over it. they are now putting this blanketed blame on romney. it's unbelievable to me. why can't they fegss and you say they lost. >> heather: there is some pundits have said they found surprising and that was president obama did not address the 47 of or bain capital. do you think biden will do that? >> yes. he should address it, but i think he should address paul ryan's makers versus takers, he said 30%. he didn't say 47%. he said 30% are moochers take from government. there is a lot of material. he clearly has shown given his convention speech that he has an issue with the truth, as well. it's not democrats sayin

people have to ask themselves, is the reason governor romney is keeping all these plans to replace secret because they're too good? >> what we're seeing right now in my view is a trickle-down government approach which thinks that government can do a better job than free people pursuing their dreams. >> it's thursday, october 4th, and "starting point" begins right now. >> good morning! welcome, everybody. our starting point this morning is the morning after debate night in america. both candidates are on the campaign trail today, again, after the first of three presidential debates, the first one, of course, in denver last night. president obama and mitt romney going toe to toe on critical issues, like the economy and health care. and by most accounts, it was mitt romney who emerged the victor. lots of debate analysis ahead on "starting point." we'll be talking live with john mccain of arizona and rand paul of kentucky. from team obama, we'll be speaking with martin o'malley and campaign spokeswoman, jen psaki. plus, obama's former economic adviser, austan goolsbee. first, though, a look a

obama and governor romney will meet on the stage at the university of colorado in their first debate where tens and millions of americans watching at home. the debate will showcase two competing visions for america, two conflicting views of government, a clash of ideas about the kind of democracy we want. it could hardly be a more stark choice for the country. but this is also personal it's about two men and who are and how they will connect with the american people. no doubt about it, this is a big night. join me now, cynthia tucker and erin mcpike who covers the campaign for real clear politics. thank you both for coming on the show. >> thank you. >> thanks for having me. >> erin, let me go to you first. mitt romney is behind. what does he need to cover up? what does he need to do tonight? >> he needs to show, especially middle class voters, that he has a plan. we've already heard from the obama campaign that the president is likely to push mitt romney on specifics and in the past couple of days he has telegraphed that we might see more specifics like immigration, especially tax po

, and if you are going to save any money through what governor romney's proposing, what has to happen is that the money has to come from somewhere. and when you move to a voucher system, you are putting seniors at the mercy of those insurance companies, and over time, if traditional medicare has decayed or fallen apart, then they're stuck. and this is the reason why aarp has said that your plan would weaken medicare, substantially, and that's why they were supportive of the approach that we took. one last point i want to make. we do have to lower the cost of health care. not just in medicare -- >> in a minute. >> but overall. >> okay. >> that's a big topic. >> i want to get to it. all i want to do, very quickly, before we leave the economy -- >> let's get back to medicare. the president said that the government could provide the service at a lower cost and without a profit. if that's the case then it will always be the best product that people can purchase. >> just a minute, governor. >> my experience is the private sector is typically able to provide a better product at a lower cost.

that governor romney is talking about is the same sales pitch that was made in 2001 and 2003. we ended up with the slowest job growth in 50 years. >> whether it was health care, jobs, or medicare, it was romney who stood out for his aggressive ste. >> i just don't know how the president could have come into office facing 23 million people out of work, rising unemployment, an economic crisis at the kitchen table, and spend his energy and passion for two years fighting for obama care. >> the president made his points in a slower, more laid back, often looking down, sometimes appearing disengaged. it's not that he didn't try to rip apart romney's economic plan. >> that kind of top-down economics where folks at the top are doing well, so the average person making $3 million is getting a $250,000 tax break while middle class families are burdened further. >> romney was determined to go toe to toe. >> well, but virtually everything he said about my tax plan is inaccurate. if the tax plan he described were a tax plan i was asked to support, i would say absolutely not. >> the president did get di

? >> reporter: that's right, may be a while before we see governor romney, it is lightning country in florida and the campaign's arrival is delayed because of fear that it might be a threatening storm. a big crowd here and big money raised by mitt romney since the debate. his debate performance clearly caught the attention of both republicans, who were worried about the trajectory of his campaign and new voters and the campaign is reporting since the debate performance they've raked in more than $12 million, and, just today, the romney campaign undertaking a national teleconference, and phone banking exercise, made another 2 million contacts with what they hope to be new republican voters. it is a $12 million boost into the debate for mitt romney and stands in the face of staggering numbers from the barack obama campaign reporting last month they collected over $181 million. that does not rival what obama did four years ago in october, before the 2008 presidential election, but is still a massive amount of money, last night, talking to the romney campaign and the big fund-raising dollars the

and governor romney said just a short time ago reacting to the jobs reports. let me play those first, both of them. >> there were fewer new jobs created this month than last month, and the unemployment rate as you noted this year has come down very, very slowly. it's come down nonetheless. the reason it came down this year is primarily due to the fact that more and more people have just stopped looking for work. >> today's news certainly is not an excuse to try to talk down the economy to score a few political points. it's a reminder that this country has come too far to turn back now. >> so john harwood, before we talk about this back and forth, i want to talk about the psychological impact of the rate falling below 8% today. >> it's positive for obama and say that the rate is where it was when i took office. i don't think we should be under any illusions. 7.8% is a high unemployment rate, weak economy. it is a talking point for the administration, and it will get a lot of media attention. it doesn't change the underlying economic reality facing americans, which is not good. >> the labor

and governor romney. a national poll out today finds that 93 percent of likely voters say they do plan to watch the debate. the same survey finds that president obama ahead nationally 49 percent to 45 percent which is just outside the margin of error. those polled rank the economy as the most important issue. on that, the two candidates are in a tie. governor romney leads when it comes to the handling of the budget deficit. however, the president is ahead on every other issue including health care and national security. we have team fox coverage. carl cameron has the latest from the romney campaign. first, we go to ed henry in las vegas. what do we know about the president's debate prep? >>reporter: they have tried to keep that quiet. we have spotted senator john kerry who is playing mitt romney in the mock debate sessions for the president in the las vegas area. he has been spotted in the lobby of the hotel, with reading glasses and a pile of papers, going through this like it is a final exam and researching every last bit. the president, when he delivered pizza to campaign volunteers to show

in the government's revenue. now, what governor romney says is i can make that up by closing tax expenditures and loopholes, but there's two problems with that. one, the arithmetic. if you you just look at people over $200,000, if you just look at the wealthiest couple of percent, the revenue cuts about $250 billion and the deductions, the broadening of the base gets you back about 160. so you're short about 90 billion. there's the math right there. and i heard absolutely nothing last night in a makes those numbers magically work out. in fact one of the things that governor romney said last night, he said, quote, i will not reduce the taxes paid by high income americans. now, this is a guy going around talking about the extent of his tax cuts. he said i will not reduce the taxes paid. a lot of people are scratching their heads. >> and they'll keep scratching. let me tell you something very interesting, bob. there was another candidate for president who also argued his tax cuts wouldn't benefit the rich. he said it during a presidential debate on the exact same date, october 3rd, in 2000. a de

>>> governor romney lives to fight another day. many of president obama's key supporters voicing their disappointment today that he did not take on governor romney when he had an opportunity. here's some of the headlines. in fact, the "los angeles times" says, quote, obama fans are shocked by mitt romney's dominance in debate. "the chicago tribune" said for obama words not said spoke the loude loudest. it said obama hit with a left hook on tv and online. the president is hitted to wisconsin, but not before taking one last parting shot a a fiery rally in denver not too long ago. >> when i got onto the stage, i met this very spirited fellow who claimed to be mitt romney. it couldn't have been mitt romney, because the real mitt romney has been running around the country for the last year promising $5 trillion in tax cuts to pay for the wealthy. the fellow on stage last night said he didn't know anything about that. >> around the same time governor romney was making a surprise appearance at the conservative political action conference, cpac in denver before heading to virginia for an

. thank you. >> governor romney fallen behind in the national polls. new polls out this morning iowa and ohio behind in both. we were laughing about the expectations setting on both sides but, governor romney has to shake things up, wednesday night, doesn't he. >> he is going to. every time mitt romney has been confronted in this campaign with one of these moments he has come through in a debate and performed extraordinarily well, laying out his vision very clearly and also contrasting himself and his vision with whoever his opponent was at that time. i have absolute confidence, george, all you will be shaking your head it is a brand new race. jenna: new jersey governor chris christie, making a bold prediction, how about that? the bold prediction related to the first presidential debate saying governor mitt romney's performance against the president could very well change the entire race. but how important are presidential debates and how much do they really shape the outcome in november? we heard a lot. joining me someone who has done research on polling impact of past debates. larr

is that government is still in control of everything. the challenge for governor romney and the debate on wednesday is going to be fully articulate his vision for america's future to the largest audience of his political career. >> we need to give the american people the choice we are offering. that is what we are offering. we owe the country a very clear choice of a different future. we can have a dynamic growing economy that produces opportunity or we can have a stagnant opportunity that fosters dependency. >> romney campaign is looking for a solid performance, no knock outs which the governor has become famous for. he has been avoiding those since he tried to make the with governor perry. >> what is the word on the foreign policy message for romney? >> the governor has an op-ed in the "wall street journal" saying of president obama, by failing to maintain our new, president obama has heightened the instability. he does not understand that an american policy that lacks resolve can provoke aggression and encourage disorder. he is making foreign policy an economic argument saying you have to have a

't think you want to answer. what is the one question governor romney doesn't want to be asked? >> you are so much more clever than i am. it had not occurred to me to try to come with -- come up with that. i suspect that obama will go after rom flee on the whole, why don't you release your taxes and the personal stuff because that seems to be the heart of the campaign. i think that governor romney ought to ask the president, how does he justify running for re-election with an economy this bad, policies this failed, and his complaint inability to bring washington together to get anything done? i think the more romney can stick to the facts, the more trouble obama will be in tomorrow night. >> greta: what do you expect tomorrow night, in terms -- if people think this will be a huge event? or is this one debate of many, it is chipping away? and what is interesting, i think that afterwards, the pundits and the analysts -- and maybe i will be doing it, calling calling whd who lost? >> look, i think it's a very clear-cut situation. romney has to go in and be very clear and very factual and s

%. governor romney is ahead 49%, he was shown behind to in florida and now he is ahead to in florida. the state of virginia, 49 to 48%. big news that is just breaking right now. that is where he, i should say, racked up another big story today. the september jobs report. the labor department says that 114,000 jobs were created last month, but the unemployment rate sharply declining to 7.8%. that is the lowest number in nearly four years. certainly some welcome news for team obama. a liberal economist cautioned that it is almost certainly a statistical fluke. john roberts is alive and st. petersburg, florida, where he will be reporting today. >> virginia has been hit hard by job losses in the coal industry. saying that the only reason why the unemployment dropped from 8.2% up to 7.8% is because so many people has dropped out of the work force. if it was a real number, it would probably be more like 11.5%. >> when i am president, the unemployment rate is going to come out, not because people are giving up and jumping out of the workforce, but because we are creating more jobs. i will c

's debate. more importantly, this is a stage where president obama and governor mitt romney will hopefully define their positions on the key domestic issues facing our nation. that's what's on the agenda for this debate tonight; jobs, the economy, health care. but first, a new distraction for the obama campaign during a critical week. it comes in the form of a video released by "the daily caller" of then-presidential candidate barack obama back in 2007. in it he speaks to a group mostly made up of black pastors. his speech got some coverage at the time he delivered it, but his prepared remarks did not include some of the off-the-cuff, off-prompter moments, if you will, alluding to alleged racism to hurricane katrina and spending decisions made by our elected leaders. our chief congressional correspondent mike emanuel is live in washington with more. mike? >> reporter: hi, megyn. the tone has attracted some attention with then-candidate obama sounding different as he spoke to a large group of african-american religious leaders in virginia. one major topic was mr. obama trying to contrast th

handled it best. certainly people they want specifics, so governor romney, he needs to tell how with some detail his administration will be different from not just the obama administration, but from the president bush. with president obama, his challenge is to spell out to people. tell them how things are going to be different. in his second term than they were in his first term without acknowledging that the first term was necessarily bad, but people don't want same old same old. they want a vision of the future and we've come away to say the end comment at the debates tonight may be the most important part. each candidates wants to play, the first object is make no mistake. make no big error. if they have a nice, closing argument, then they can come out. i don't think president obama wants any drama. no drama obama because in debates, normally sort of cool. i don't think he can afford to overplay that hand tonight. for mitt romney, it's a good opportunity to attack, but not be seen as being some sort of attack dog. put the president on the defensive. >> let me bring in jason chaffitz fr

new jersey governor chris christie, and one-time adversary, newt gingrich. so far romney is sticking to a familiar theme, but does he need to do more? >> i will lower the tax rate. he wants to creat to raise them. i'll create jobs and he'll kill them. also marsha blackburn, bob shrum, and larry sabato from the university of virginia center for politics. as we head into first presidential debate, we'll talk about the state of america at home and abroad with the distinguished panel. michelle rhee, former head of the washington, d.c. school system and founder of students first. economist mark zandi of moody analytics. bob woodward, author of "the price of politics" and hendrick smith, author of the new book "who stole the american dream?." it's all ahead on "face the nation." captioning sponsored by cbs from cbs news in washington, "face the nation" with bob schieffer. >> schieffer: and we welcome now to the broadcast new jersey governor chris christie. governor, thank you for being here. governor i have to start off by saying i don't hear very many republicans these days who think mitt

. animated, forceful and taking shots at his gop opponent. >> governor romney said he would get rid of planned parenthood funding. apparently, this along with big bird is driving the deficits. >> reporter: the campaign rallies and the presidential debates are very different events, but the contrast in body language and the sales pitch is hard to overlook. zingers are back. >> my opponent is trying to do a two-step and re-position. and got an extreme makeover, governor romney was fact-checked by his own campaign. >> reporter: and so was talk about governor romney's mention of the 47% fundraiser, which never came up in the debate. >> we have all said that real change takes time. it certainly can't happen if you're willing to write off half the nation before you take office. >> reporter: many argue that while the president lost on performance at the debate, he won on substance. but his gop opponent, campaigning in virginia, begs to differ. >> i get the chance to ask the president some questions, i think people across the country wanted to ask him these questions. i got a chance to ask

. susan, did governor chris christie think he was helping mitt romney by saying that the debate would just be turning this race upside down? what do you think? >> i think chris christie was just being chris christie. while you're correct, a lot of people were dampening expectations, chris said what a lot of people are hoping and thinking. mitt romney delivers a vision with some specifics that people can grab on to and can turn this race around. the fact is things flip-flopped very, very quickly in the last two or three weeks. they can go back the other way. only if romney performs well. >> chris kofinis, do you believe that romney can turn this around as many months as he's had, one misstep after another, and by a wide margin, americans think president obama is going to win this debate and has the upper hand. what about expectations and what about the possibility of romney turning this around? what do you think? >> well, that's clearly their strategy. you have to love governor christie for raising expectations, but he was basically telling the truth. the romney campaign has to have a good

is as governor romney has said repeatedly, he is running to help 100% of americans." he has said that. he said that repeatedly. it still resonating in a negative way with voters. what do you think he has to say about the 47% which has dogged his campaign since that video came out? >> remember, that was recorded during a fund-raising activity. it was a cut. this is an opportunity for governor romney to have his message come through unfiltered to the american people. that's, i think, what needs to come through. his sincerity, his warmth, his intellect, his optimism on the future of america and how we solve the challenges, and the two roads. the road the president defined over the last four years, we don't think the american people have embraced and will continue to embrace, and the road of optimism and pro-growth policies to get america back to work. that's the choice. >> isn't the problem for mitt romney that people obviously believe, which was the mantra, that the democratic party tried to define that the obama campaign tried to define, that is not a guy for the 100%? this is a guy who frankly

dates call serious hits he took last night from governor romney in the big debate. well tomorrow to "america live." back in new york, folks i'm megyn kelly. a look back now in denver, colorado where a fired up barack obama has just finished this rally. he was going off on governor romney in that campaign appearance, and we heard a very different-sounding barack obama at this rally. it comes after the president's top campaign advisers, hour after hour hit the air waves clearly trying to reframe the presidential's debate performs answer. political observers said he looked irritated, annoyed and was unhappy to be on the stage while mitt romney sounded presidential. thousand they try to make the argument that governor romney only won last night because he lied. here is the president moments ago. >> we also had our first debate last night. when i got onto the stage i met this very spirited fellow who claimed to be mitt romney. [laughter] >> but it couldn't have been mitt romney, because the real mitt romney has been running around the country for the last year promising $5 trillion in

know, president obama was specific and governor romney just attacked. i mean that's the frame they're trying to deliver going in. >> i do want to spend some time on that paul ryan 70/30 clip, richard, because that, if anything, cements that narrative more. writing in the times today, journalists have found working-class voters who believe that obama is a secret muslim and intend to vote for him anyway because, as one virginia put it, at least he wasn't brought up filthy rich. this assumption that the wealthy republican candidate is inevitably a candidate for the wealthy as well is a big part of what's been killing romney's campaign. >> right. let's be clear the kinds of people that paul ryan was talking about include seniors, people who are drawing social security. >> those takers. they just take. >> taking more from the freg than they are -- federal government than they are paying in. they happen to be the numbers that vote in large numbers. if you're a republican and deficits with minorities and women, you need those white seniors to show up in large numbers for you. maybe they w

, that has entered the post debate spin cycle. >> governor romney may dance around his positions, but if you want to be president, you owe the american people the truth. >> stretching the truth or worse, that's how mitt romney won the debate. it's now a familiar refrain from democrats. echoed by sympathetic media outlets. >> i give him credit for a strong performance. i give him a "f" for being honest with the american people. >> at the end of the day he failed on the facts. >> governor romney has changed a number of positions or didn't remember some of his positions. >> republicans call it all sour grapes. >> with what this says is that obama got his clock cleaned in the schoolyard and now he and his friends are out there the next day saying, we would have, could have, should have, and making up excuses for why ne lost. >> and even as some democrats make the charge of what they call romney's debate fabrications, they concede, the president should have pushed back on stage. >> in attempt to go sort of be cool, be presidential, he tried to stay above the frey and ended up looking detached, a

mitt romney's tax plan would affect the middle class. the governor can fight back by offering evidence the claims aren't true. do you think they have done enough to actually offer specifics, and do you think he's going to have to do that at the debate? >> i think he's going to have to offer specifics at some time, anderson. i mean, look, there are not just magic asterisks in the romney/ryan program. there are complete empty sections of geography, complete deserts. we don't even know how those huge tax cuts, mostly for the very wealthy, are going to be paid for. there's no idea of which loopholes are going to be closed, how loopholes are going to be closed, whether loopholes are going to be closed, what in fact is a loophole. there's no there there. until there is a there there, the public is not going to feel that this plan is credible. >> ari, what about that? romney and ryan keep saying we believe we're going to work with congress and work out those details. >> here's how i look at it. number one, he's a candidate for office. when you look at the totality of his proposals, he says he

shows up at the next debate with romney in new york. >> jim, on the campaign trail, governor romney today more energized? >> absolutely, anderson. we were with him on his campaign plane during the day and as he got on the plane, he was smiling, he was laughing with his campaign staff. there was a spring in his step. there was an air of confidence in this campaign that i haven't seen in several weeks and in talking to senior romney advisor eric fehrnstrom, he said to me if this was a prize fight, they would have stopped the fight. that's how well they think mitt romney did. they're not going to be taking their foot off the gas pedal, i can tell you that the romney campaign came to the back of the plane just as it was landing here in virginia earlier this afternoon. they were starting to sense that the story, the narrative was starting to change from sort of a post-debate high for mitt romney to this new counter-offensive from the president going after some of the statements that mitt romney made during this debate. they came back to the back of the plane as the plane was landing and

. >> stop lying, mr. president. >> lying? >> yeah! >> what's the lie? >> governor romney is not talking about tax cuts for the wealthy. he says that the wealthy will take just as much under the romney administration as they paid today. >> you can see jersey governor chris christie saying what mitt romney has been claiming, say that this barack obama ads are false. he wants to correct the record on obamacare and medicare, et cetera. very, very tough stuff f. mr. romney can accuse him of lying, that will be a very, very sharp moment. both sides trying to downplay the expectations in all of this, with the belief that if you can set the barlow enough, either one of them can jump over it. >> jamie: we have seen a lot of that. on the sunday shows today. carl, you have been to a number of debates. any inside intel on the keys that the viewers should be watching for from home on wednesday night? >> personality. whether or not each of these men are engaged, empathetic with the voter concerns and have sharp, catchy answers. the battle over facts and who scores the most points or lands the most bl

, more people are getting jobs. >> and here is governor romney's reaction to the same number. >> the reason it's come down this year is primarily due to the fact that more and more people have just stopped looking for work. and if you just drop out of the work force, if you just give up and say i can't go back to work, i'm going to stay home and drop out altogether, why, you're no longer part of the employment statistics, so looks like unemployment is getting better. but the truth is if the same share of people were participating in the work force today, as on the day the president got elected, our unemployment rate would be around 11%. >> the president clearly sees today's numbers good news for his campaign, but eric you've been digging into the numbers. can you help us dig a little deeper. what do the numbers say? >> there's something in here that i really, honestly in 25 years of doing this, that i can't figure out. and here a quick white board on it. okay, so the bureau of labor statistics come out and the estimates by the economists were 113,000 jobs created. wall street

governor romney was a liarment she didn't say he was lying. governor romney is opening his mouth, he's lying. that didn't seem to be too outrageous, but saying he's lazy. >> president obama admitted he was lazying talking to barbara walters. >> yes, but you're not allowed to say it. >> wait a second, wait a second. he said having grown up in hawaii he thinks there's laziness in him a guy who is a super achiever, oh, my gosh, a super achiever, a top academic guy. president. >> how do we know that. >> juan, brain washed by the-- >> and let me tell you something, here is how brain washed i was, i think he was president of the harvard law review, i don't know why. >> and overachieved the community organizers. >> i don't know about you, but nobody asked me to be on the harvard law review and let me say this. this is a guy, and i think that dana is sitting here and tell you, presidents of the united states work hard. there's no getting around how much-- >> they're not talking about him as a-- as a person. they're saying that for the debate that that's how he appeared. >> lazy. >> and what

performance. >> governor romney may dance around the position, but if you want to be president you owe the american people the truth. >> gretchen: who is the one really lying? >> steve: meanwhile thank goodness for al gore . he explains why the president flopped out. >> you go to 5,000 feet and only a few hours to adjust. >> steve: isn't he the guy who invented the intim ator. blame it on the thin air . we'll tell you that story. >> brian: joe biden, take another gaffe. >> you guys sit down if you have a seat. guyings, i didn't realize you didn't have seats, i apologize . my mother would kill me if a woman was standing this long. i apologize . >> brian: another instant biden classic coming to you and what he said later on is note worthy especially to paul ryan who will be debating him shortly . -- shortly. "fox and friends" starts right now. >> steve: so you were wearing pants all along? >> brian: i am not saying anything. >> gretchen: they are snap on. >> steve: as long as they are not snap offs . >> gretchen: we have a peek underneath. twitter me if you think brian bears boxers or br

, governor mitt romney is speaking at an event in st. petersburg, florida. we understand is he going to be touching on the economy. let's watch for just a moment. >> the participation of our adults in the workforce were the same as at the time that he got elected. our unemployment rate would be about 11%. people in this country are having a hard time finding a job. people in this country are having a hard time making ends meet even if they do have a job. so it's time to have someone who is elected president who actually has a plan and i do. we will create 12 million jobs and rising incomes. that's the kind of future we need to have for america. [cheers] and you know the things. i have got five things. you heard me talk about them. i don't have to look at notes to know what they're by the way. i know what they're. number one, number one, we're going to take advantage of our energy, our coal, our gas, our oil our nuclear, our renumbers. [. [cheers and applause] >> we're going to double the number of permits on federal lands and federal waters and get the oil off the shore of alaska and

are complaining. governor romney's team says the white house is still getting its story mixed up. >> reporter: democrats say republicans are politicizing the tragic attack that cost of life of four americans. the republicans say the white house is cover ugging up the details for political reasons. here is axlerod. >> the president called it an act of terror the day after it happened. but when you are the responsible party, when you are the administration and you have a responsibility to act on what you know and what the intelligence community believed. >> reporter: actually it was several days after the benghazi attack before the white house called it terrorism and that came after the national terrorism chief called it aterror attack. >> i think now based on the recommendations of the intelligence community, they made the decision to conclude this was a terrorist attack. in the days afterwards that was not clear. >> reporter: bluff * called it preposterous. bill: there have been calls for susan rice's resignation. where does that stand today. >> reporter: the president says rice has done extr

. not a talk show or cable host, the party to brand governor romney a liar and think that that will get vote for president obama is a big mistake. both president obama and governor romney should warn their campaigns to stop the slander. there are enough legitimate issues to be debated. the truth is the president could not defend his economic record on wednesday night. that's why governor romney won the debate. nothing lying had nothing to do with it. >> yesterday, big news came out and it was a head scratcher for everyone from economists to pundits to politician and these were the unemployment numbers. here is what was confusing. only 114,000 jobs were added in the month of september. that's less than we need to keep up -- keep pace even with population growth. >> what do we need about 200,000. >> yes and 114 is considered anemic. however, somehow the unemployment rate dropped from 8.1 all the way down to 7.8 and that has left economists saying how did this happen? >> how in the world did this happen because 873,000 more people had jobs according to another survey that was a part of this thi

governor romney who has a very solid education plan. you've got the president who i would argue of all of the things he done in the past four years, he's been most successful at education. and so, i think that the reason why potentially it's not being talked about is because both sides really have to-- are really thinking about the special interests within their party. with the democrates, the teachers' union. they clearly don't want a lot of change to happen. with the republican, with the 53 tatterrers they don't want-- tea partiers, they don't want federal intervention. the reality is we have a significant problem in this country. request with look at where we are with the unemployment numbers and also with the fact that most employers today will tell you that for the vacancies that they have, they cannot find qualified people to fill them. there's a huge diskeck there. and i think this country is going to continue to struggle until we fix the public education system. and make sure that we are preparing the children of today for the jobs of tomorrow. >> schieffer: and back to newt gi

when president obama and governor romney go head to head a little more than 48 hours from right now. welcome to "america live," everyone, i'm megyn kelly. a new survey of likely voters finds that almost one in five say that they can still be swayed to vote for either candidate here. and some of those wavering voters say they are waiting for these debates to help them decide. the headline here according to bloomberg, about 18% of the electorate is, quote, persuadable, and that is a big number considering that early voting has already begun. chris stirewalt is our fox news digital politics editor and host of "power play" on foxnews.com. so the campaigns have got to see that, in particular the romney camp, as good news, chris, since he is shown as trail anything a lot of these swing state polls as well. >> well, certainly it's not good news if you're president obama. if that's true, if you really have 18% persuadable voters, this comes after fife months -- five months of the most stained, negative attack, most personal barrage against a candidate by an incumbent president that we've ev

-to-face for the two candidates. president obama, governor mitt romney preparing to make their cases to tens of millions of americans expected to watch on television tonight. in the meantime, "the daily caller" releasing a videotape from 2007 where then candidate, barack obama, suggested racism played a role in the government's response to hurricane katrina. now the reverend jeremiah write was in the audience at the time. mr. obama went on to praise the controversial pastor, calling him a friend and a great leader. mike emanuel is live in washington with all of this. and, mike, some of then candidate barack obama's remarks deal with trying to help poor people. how did he handle that topic? >> reporter: well, gregg on the video senator obama at the time seas we don't need to build more highways out in the suburbs. he said there should be investment in minority owned businesses in our neighborhoods in front of that group of black ministers. here is mr. obama on assisting the poor. >> they may need help with basic skills, how to shop, how to show up to work on time. how to wear the right clothe

of the policy. governor romney without doubt understands that our country is exceptional. he recognizes the role we've played in the world. he believes the world is a better place if we're a participant in that world, and recognizes that it is not for us to go around the world apologizing and ringing our hands. what's called the arab spring is something happening in the islamic world. it's not arab only, because it's happening in a good many other countries as you know well. it's not spring, but it's summer and fall. it's going to be winter. it is a significant shift on the part of a lot of people in a lot of countries, who are encouraged and see the rise of islamist nonsecular forces in those countries. that is not in our interest. >> greta: mr. secretary, always nice to see you, sir. >> thank you. >> greta: straight ahead, why is the obama administration telling companies to break the law? how can the president justify this? making matters worse, the president is promising to pay the legal bills of the companies breaking the law with, you guessed it, taxpayer money. this story is likely to ung

governor romney was just simply illustrating a point that he would be willing to cut even popular things like big bird because he doesn't see that it's a federal responsibility. >> mitt romney now says that he was wrong about that 47% comment as well. listen to this. >> clearly in a campaign with hundreds if not thousands of speeches and queion and answer sessions, now and then you're going to say something that doesn't come out right. in this case, i said something that's just completely wrong. >> president obama, surprising a lot of people by not even bringing that up in the debate. but amy, i'm going to go to you first on this one. does this end the conversation about the 47%? >> well, interestingly enough, as so many pundits, so of the debate watchers have noted, president obama didn't bring it up in the debate when he had a chance, talking about the economy, talking about all these folks who are unemployed or underemployed, and it would seem to indicate that president obama was saying that this was not worth pursuing. he certainly had used it on the campaign trail. it's been used in

. governor romney is good. i'm just okay. >> and paul ryan played his own version. >> president obama is a gifted speaker. he's been on the national stage for many years. he's done these kinds of debates before. this is mitt's first time on this kind of a stage. >> but if all candidates are trying to lower expectations, maybe chris christie missed that memo. >> governor romney's going to lay out his vision for a better and greater america for greater opportunity for all of our citizens. and i think that's when you're going to see this race really start to tighten and move in governor romney's direction. come thursday morning, the entire narrative of this race is going to change. >> i want to bring in dana milbank and matt welsh. good morning to both of you. >> good morning. >> i suppose we shouldn't be surprised this race to lower expectations. give us your take on the expectations for this debate. >> romney needs something to happen for him. he's had a bad couple of weeks. ever since the 47% comment which i think that be difficult for him. what he needs to do is kind of what obama di
